'Hello All, I'm running into an intermittent problem where my application loses connection to Sybase. I'm getting the following error: 'Error:08001Native Code:30012ASEOLEDBClient unable to establish a connection.' ' The number of user connections set on the database is 600 ( I believe this is the number of concurrent connections? If so, this couldn't be the issue because 600 is plenty) I've tried monitoring when this occurs to see if it is related to when there's high activity or when there's slow network performance, but I do not see any correlation.

I've also tried switching from using OLEDB to ODBC driver, but I get the same problem. I'm going to try turning on tracing with Ribo to see if I can get a more detailed error as to why I am unable to connect, but wanted to check if anyone else have ran into the same problem.

Hello everyone, This issue has had me baffled for some time now. Since it's intermittent, it was very difficult to troubleshoot. Today I had some time to look into this issue again and to reproduce the problem, I was able to send in multiple requests with a test client. I found that this is not related to connection pooling or to the database connection at all.
The issue is at a lower TCP/IP level. The sybase ribo tracing error 'Address already in use' was the clue that got me to look into the netstat tool. I'm not a network guru, so please forgive me if I am explaining things incorrectly. Running netstat -a -n -p tcp on the production server shows many TCP connections remain in a TIMEWAIT status for a long time and do not seem to release. When I start running into the error, I notice that there are no more ephemeral ports left to be used. Thus, I did some search on Google and found the following article to decrease the TIMEWAIT interval on a very busy server: http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/registry2/the-timewait-state-s-effect-on-iis-performance.
Note: I've obviously changed the server names and IPs to fictitious ones. Here's what's going on. I've got a server, which I'm calling MYSERVER, running Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005. Right on this server itself, I've got an ODBC connection set up pointing at itself, and that already works perfectly.
I log in using SQL Server Authentication (not Windows authentication), and it's set up like this: Like I said, that one works. But next, I've got another computer which is on a totally different domain/not on the intranet, that needs to access this same SQL Server hosted on MYSERVER.
Because it's on a different domain, it doesn't recognize the name 'MYSERVER'; I have to point it at the IP address of MYSERVER, which we'll say is 123.456.789.012. But the ODBC connection doesn't seem to work there. I tried setting it up like this: This doesn't work. When I put in the username and password and press Next, it stalls for a good 10 to 20 seconds, and then finally comes back with the following error: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 1326 MicrosoftODBC SQL Server DriverDBNETLIBConnectionOpen (Connect). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 MicrosoftODBC SQL Server DriverDBNETLIBSQL Server does not exist or access denied. If I try the same thing, but change the 'server' from 123.456.789.012 SQLEXPRESS to just plain old 123.456.789.012, I get a different error: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 14 MicrosoftODBC SQL Server DriverDBNETLIBConnectionOpen (Invalid Instance).
Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 14 MicrosoftODBC SQL Server DriverDBNETLIBInvalid connection. Now I know what you're thinking. You might be thinking, 'duh, you probably didn't open the firewall for port 1433, dummy.' Except I did, and I verified this, as I can successfully run: telnet 123.456.789.012 1433.from the command line all I want. So I'm not sure what to do. I know the SQL Server exists, works, and an ODBC connection can be set up properly; I'm just not sure what it is I've got wrong in my connection settings that's throwing these errors.
Based on the latter error I listed, it would seem that it can connect to the server, but simply cannot find the instance (since I didn't specify one that time). So does that mean I just need to use some different syntax to specify the IP along with an instance name? What do I do? Thanks in advance.
I'm accepting your answer because it got me on the right track. Under SQL Server Configuration Manager, TCP/IP was already enabled all along under 'SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration Protocols for SQLEXPRESS' and 'SQL Native Client Configuration Client Protocols.'
Named Pipes was already enabled in the latter. I enabled it in the former, but that didn't seem to help (same error messages).
Finally, I switched the ODBC source to use the 'SQL Native Client' driver instead of the 'SQL Server' driver, and that finally DID work. – Nov 9 '09 at 14:08.
When you inadvertently set SQL Server’s ‘max server memory’ to a very low value, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:. SQL Server cannot be started (from a tool like configuration manager) and the following message is logged in the SQL error log: ”An internal query can’t be executed due to inefficient memory. SQL instance is started, but connections would fail with an error message that reads: Cannot connect to Additional information: The client was unable to establish connection because of an error during connection initialization process before login.
Possible causes include the following: the client tried to connect to an unsupported version of SQL Server, the server was too busy to accept new connections; or there was a resource limitation (insufficient memory or maximum allowed connections) on the server. (provider: Shared Memory Provider: Error:0 – No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:233) No process on the other end of the pipe. As noted in this, we can try to workaround this issue by starting SQL Server with minimal configuration by adding– f to SQL startup parameters, but in most cases this causes SQL to start in single user mode and the connection is typically grabbed by some other process other than a tool like SSMS that can be used to correct the memory setting. The solution to this scenario is to specify the app that will be allowed to connect to SQL Server by using the –m parameter as noted below: NET START MSSQLSERVER /f /m' Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio - Query' OR NET START MSSQLSERVER /f /m'SQLCMD' Additional References:. Lance, Carson and Larry - Based upon a previous thread I posted regarding ASA and ASE environments for our website DB and the issues we were having, I took your advice and did the following: 1. Generated our website DB in an ASE 11.9.2 environment instead of ASA 6.0.2 2.
Error 08001 Sybase Odbc Driver Client Unable To Establish A Connection
Established an Open Client connection profile to the web DB instead of using ODBC. Created an Open Client connection from the website to the ASE 11.9.2 primary database. Here's is what is happening now!:( - Please see the attachment! Summary: PD pages executing stored procedures under an Open Cl.
What do I need to change on my 'puter when the icon in the toolbar shows and tells me I am connected and the error message tells me I am not and I can not go to web pages, get or send emails. I have to close down and restart to get connected again. This only happens if I am on line and leave the 'puter for an hour or so. As long as I am using it I don't have a problem.
